The Real Estate Development Process: Step by Step

The Real Estate Development Process: Step by Step

Thursday, July 18, 2024 (10:00 AM - 5:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step Lao Tzu, Chinese Philosopher 6th to 4th Century BCE.

There are many steps in the real estate development process, and those steps are often retraced and head off in different directions as projects run into political, design, financing, construction and operational obstacles. An asset manager’s awareness of the steps in the development process and how various players perceive and work to mitigate risks associated with real estate development can help them understand how to improve each project’s long-term feasibility and success. The training will include case study work to let asset managers apply the skills they’ve learned to real world problems.

The course objectives:

1. Increase awareness of the many steps associated with the real development process and the various dimensions of each step.

2. Identify opportunities for asset managers and showcase asset management practices that will impact decisions at each step in the process with the goal of increasing long-term project viability.

3. Understand there are multiple players involved in each step of the development process, but the risk and responsibility of asset management ultimately falls on the property owner or sponsor.

4. Learn how asset managers can present information that will help the owners make informed decisions when considering the purchase and improvement of a property and preservation of an asset.

CHAM is excited to partner with Grow America to provide this training. Founded as a national nonprofit in 1969. Grow America acts as partner, teacher, advisor, investor, developer and lender – and its instructors will bring that experience to this session to help asset managers better understand the real estate development process. Tom Jackson, Senior Director Carolyn Zielinski, Director of Asset Management Bryan Snyder, Asset Manager.

This course meets the Housing Development requirement for CHAM's Certified Housing Asset Manager designation.

Hear what folks who took the course have to say:

"The design of the course was fantastic! I liked how it started with the stages of the development process, expanded on them, tied them all together and then used actual, real world examples to tie it all together. The instructors were great! They actually work in the field and could describe actual projects and events and demonstrate how all these factors could affect a project from a global perspective."

"It was fantastic! The course was clear, to the point and well organized. I really appreciate how they spoke to us and not at us."

"I really learned a lot by seeing the whole development process and how asset management has an important, holistic role in these projects."
